Rains hit the Informal Settlement of Boiketlong

On the 24th January 2010 a team from CORC went to the Boiketlong Informal Settlement next to Sebokeng (Emfuleni Municipal area). In recent days, there had been a significant amount of rainfall, and the trip was to check on the conditions in which the community has now found themselves. The community is faced with disaster as their houses are almost floating in water.
Water comes from beneath the houses and that means the informal settlement is on a dolomitic area. Some people have even dug trenches in their shacks so that water can pass through.
People’s belongings are floating in water, i.e. furniture, clothes, etc.
It was suggested that the community should get their local councilor but they indicated that they do not have his contact and also do not know where he lives. I then insisted that they should get him and hopefully he will be available by tomorrow.
CORC staff member Max Rambau will be writing a letter to the District Municipality to inform them about the situation of the people of Boiketlong.
